Abstract
Background: Mucocele of gallbladder is very occasional condition considered by accumulation of mucinous material within the gallbladder. Management options include early cholecystectomy or conservative management. However, the optimal approach remains uncertain.
Aim: This retrospective cohort study aimed to associate outcomes of initial cholecystectomy versus conservative management in patients diagnosed with mucocele gall bladder.
Methods: Medical records of patients identified with mucocele gall bladder among March 2023 and February 2024 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups based on management strategy: early cholecystectomy group and conservative management group. Data on demographics, clinical presentation, imaging findings, surgical procedures, postoperative problems, and long-term results were collected and assessed.
Results: An overall of 150 individuals were included in research, having 75 patients in every group. In the early cholecystectomy group, 65 patients (86.7%) had complete resolution of symptoms compared to 45 patients (60%) in the conservative management group. Complication rates were lower in initial cholecystectomy group (12%) associated to conservative management group (28%). Furthermore, the recurrence rate was suggestively lower in the early cholecystectomy group (5%) associated to the conservative management group (20%).
Conclusion: Early cholecystectomy appears to be associated with shorter hospital stays, lower complication rates, and improved long-term outcomes compared to conservative management in patients with mucocele gall bladder. These findings suggest that early surgical intervention may be the preferred treatment strategy for this condition.
